How to Run Macros on MacOS

Unleash the Power of Automation

This guide will show you how to create and use macros on your MacBook to streamline repetitive tasks and enhance your workflow. While macOS doesn’t have a built-in macro recorder, you can achieve similar functionality using Automator, a powerful automation tool.

Creating Macros with Automator

  1. Open Automator: Locate the Automator application in your Applications folder.
  2. Choose a Document Type: Select “Quick Action” to create a macro triggered by a keyboard shortcut or the Services menu.
  3. Select Actions: Explore the library of actions on the left side. These are individual building blocks that you can combine to create your workflow. You can search for specific actions or browse by category.
  4. Build Your Workflow: Drag and drop actions from the library into the workflow area on the right. The order you arrange them in determines the execution sequence.
  5. Configure Actions: Some actions have settings you can adjust. For instance, a “Copy to Clipboard” action lets you specify what content to copy.
  6. Test and Save: Click “Run” in the top-right corner to test your workflow. Once satisfied, give it a name and save it in a convenient location like the “Quick Actions” folder.

Keyboard Shortcuts (Optional)

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Go to “Keyboard” > “Shortcuts” and select “Services” from the sidebar.
  3. Find your macro under “General” and assign a keyboard shortcut.

Triggering Your Macro

Now you can trigger your macro using the assigned keyboard shortcut or by right-clicking on a file or selection and choosing your macro from the Services menu.
